VENICE FILM FESTIVAL ASKED TO SHOW CONCERN FOR ART CINEMAS

03.09.2018. The International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) is opposing the choice of the direction of the Mostra del Cinema di Venezia to present three movies belonging to Netflix in the competitions sections.

The Venice International Film Festival presents in its official line-up three movies belonging to Netflix: “Roma” by Alfonso Cuaron, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by the Coen and “Sulla mia pelle” by Stefano Cucchi.

A prestigious film festival allowing in its official selection line-up titles that will not be seen on the big screen internationally encourages practices that endanger an important sector of the film industry. Cinema and television are different mediums and cinematic films are made to be seen according to high quality standards on the big screen.

Earlier this year Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival set an example and took the side of art cinemas and decided to exclude films without a theatrical release in France from competition.

Art house exhibitors from across the world encourage the artistic director of the Venice International Film Festival, Alberto Barbera to reconsider the Mostra’s policies and to reserve the official selection for the works of art that will be seen in cinemas internationally. It’s time that A category film festivals defending art films bring into discussion the importance of the big screen and the media chronology, which is key to offering the best visibility for the director’s work.
